Lamson Institute scientists are investigating the use of the drug, called “Cialis,” to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).
The drug works by relaxing the muscles in the walls of blood vessels, allowing more blood to flow in.
“We are excited about the potential of this drug to treat ED and its impact on male sexual function,” said Dr. Adam Friedman, director of research and teaching at the university’s medical school and a principal investigator for the study.
“We are also investigating the potential benefits of Cialis,” he continued. “We are looking at the potential for this medication to help men get and keep an erection.”
The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIA) and a grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).
The Cialis study will be presented at the 2023 Men’s Sexual Health Conference in San Francisco.

“This study is the first to look at the potential of Cialis to treat ED,” said Friedman.
“The study will examine the effects of Cialis on men with erectile dysfunction, its possible mechanisms of action, and their possible risks to their health,” said co-principal investigator Dr. Adam Friedman.
“Cialis is a very well-tolerated medication and can be a promising treatment option for men who do not respond well to other medications,” said Dr. Michael E. Rosenblatt, a principal investigator for the study.
“Although the drug has been shown to be effective, it has the potential of causing side effects and adverse reactions in some patients,” said Friedman.
